This work is about the power of human gesture to convey meaning. I searched for forms that would provoke questions about identity, dislocation and change. The materials are tar and oil paint on canvas or wood. The weight and opacity of the tar seem to defy its movement across the canvas while the edges bleed and flow in expressive ways. The color introduced by the oil paint offers light and brings respite to the darkness and density of the tar. It is my hope that the mystery inherent in these works will resonate with the viewer in provocative and unsettling ways.
